Darko clears his throat. “I’m Darko, this is Spike and Erica,” he glances over at me, “and I imagine you already know,” he searches for the right word, “Katherine.”

She nods, her eyes remaining glued on me. “I can’t believe you’re here.” I can’t either. “Daniel was positive you’d come. He said that you’d be foolish not to.”

I can’t help but laugh at that. “Daniel knows that foolishness isn’t one of my many traits.”

Jessica shakes her head in disbelief and steps out, wrapping me in her arms. “I am so happy you came!”

I stood awkwardly in her embrace, unsure how to react. Everything about being here just felt so unnatural and insanely weird. She stepped back, her arms on my shoulder as she looked me over. “We have been so worried about you.”

Spike grumbles, “Can we go inside?”

“Oh yes!” she states, offering a smile. “How rude of me. Please come in.”

We move in behind her, my eyes trailing over the walls taking it all in. Everything looks the same, placed in the same place on those golden walls. The sound of rattling coming from the kitchen and a deep voice says something, moments before a head full of curly hair and warm eyes rounds the corner. “Jessica, where did we put the...” his words break off as his eyes fall on us.

“Hello, Daniel.”

“Katherine, is that really you?” he asks, and in one smooth motion he is pulling me into his arms and spinning me around. “I can’t believe it! Where the hell have you been?”

I let myself inhale hs wonderous scent, the comfort of his embrace calming more of my nerves. “Doesn’t matter, I’m here now. Where’s Stryker?”

Daniel presses his lips together. “He’s resting, but I am sure he would be happy to see you. I can’t believe you really came.”

“Did you have doubts?”

He rocks back on his heel. “I can’t say that I didn’t, you stormed out of here Kat. There was no telling whether you would show or not.” I guess I really didn’t give them a reason for my escape. “The others thought I was crazy for even thinking about reaching out to you, but someone had to.”

“It hasn’t been the same without you here,” Jessica admits.

It’s never going to be the same. Not after everything has already happened.

I swept a hand through my hair. “I don’t think it’ll ever be the same,” I tell them.

Jessica averts her gaze, unshed tears threatening to escape. “You don’t know what we’ve gone through looking for you.

“I didn’t want to be found.”

Daniel's tone and expressions awoke an old unwelcoming feeling. “Just because you didn’t want to be found doesn’t mean that you are unfindable.”

“Daniel,” I start, not wanting to argue right now.

Darko steps forward. “Enough,” the single word spoken silences Daniel like a slap in the mouth, and the expression that he holds says not to test him.

I can’t say that I don’t appreciate Darkos attempt to shield me from the past, the last thing I want right now is to argue my whereabouts.
